I've never had any problems with spending tax dollars on stadia. It's always been how the deals were done in the end that got my goat. Case in point, the city and county here in Houston own Minute Maid Park, but after the deal was signed and before it was completed, they "sold" the naming rights to Astros owner Drayton McLain for an absurdly low figure, which he then sold to Enron for $100 million (Ironically the same projected cost of the entire Dynamo Park)!! How much of that did the city get? Nothing. And yet, this deal was done after construction was well under way. Was Drayton going to walk away at that point over the naming rights deal? No. And yet, he got extra millions that could have gone to the city. Stoopid. The city and county didn't want to pay for it, but the state legislature finally bent over, gave up tax money, and the stadium is being built in the suburbs. I understand that there is a benefit to the local community to have a soccer team, but why do these companies/individuals owning the teams deserve a break of public tax dollars funding their development? Garber needs to get a freaking clue, if you live in Houston then you know the Dynamo are supported very heavily here more so than alot of other citys teams, and it would be a heartbreaker to have our team move all I can say is OILERS anyone?
