The Birdman Cometh
By: Jeremy | May 27th, 2009
Houston sent a 2010 first-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft and a 2011 second-round pick in the MLS SuperDraft to the New York Red Bulls in exchange for Dominic Oduro.
Oduro, 23, is already in his fourth season in Major League Soccer. Oduro played with FC Dallas from 2006-08, scoring nine goals in 70 games, and has made three appearances with the Red Bulls this season. He played collegiate soccer at Virginia Commonwealth University from 2004-05. A native of Pramso, Ghana, Oduro has been called into camp with the Ghana U-23 national team but has not made any appearances.
2008: Appeared in 25 games (nine starts) for FC Dallas, tallying a career high five goals and two assists. Also registered a career high in shots (28) and shots on goal (16). Scored a pair of goals off the bench in a span of nine minutes on May 24 in 2-1 victory over Real Salt Lake.
2007: Led FC Dallas with 29 regular season appearances, starting 10 matches. Scored three goals and two assists, registering 24 shots. Played a career-high 1,163 minutes. Recorded first career MLS assist on Sept. 15 vs. New England.
2006: Selected in the second round (22nd overall) in the 2006 MLS SuperDraft by FC Dallas. Made MLS debut on June 28 at New England. Made first career start and scored first career goal on July 8 against New York.
Nickname is “The Birdman.” Lists T.I. and Lil’ Wayne among favorite musicians. Enjoys reading books by John Grisham. Son of Anthony and Elizabeth Oduro. Graduated from VCU with a Bachelor’s of Science in sociology. Beside English, also speaks Ghana dialects of Twi, Ga, Nzema, and Fante.
Oduro is expected to fly to Houston in time for Thursday’s training and will be available to the media at Thursday’s 1:00 p.m. press conference.
Dave, if you’re reading this, what can you tell us about “The Birdman”?
Dallas sucks.

My worry is who are we going to have to release from our roster to accomodate this guy? And, why is it always for draft picks – What did we have the 40th pick or something last year?
On the other hand, he scored more goals for Dallas than I thought the entire team had scored last season.
So, In Dom we trust, and Dallas Sucks.Posted from

So we have Oduro, Kamara, Ching, Wondo, Akinbiyi up top? Surely one has to go? Any ideas what Oduro’s salary is?

A nice, nice little pick up. Richard, no one goes anywhere. With Ching away throughout June, possibly Holden and Rico gone for national team duties as well from time to time (And Kamara for Sierra Leone?) there’ll be plenty of spots.

Martek – I think (thogh I may be wrong) that our roster was full before the trade. So we’d either have to put s-one on IR (Robinson?) or trade someone away. May not be a forward, but someone.

I’m a little perplexed that we would go after another forward, too. Martek does make a good point, though. But how many players have we lost off our back line? Maybe our depth is much more solid back there. It must be, considering their performance, but will it hold up?

Oh, there was also mention of Oduro being called up to the Ghana U-23 national team. What happens if they come calling again? I’m sure Ashe, Wondo, and Akinbiyi will work in a pinch but it’s not something I’d want to rely on for an extended period. Besides, Oduro hasn’t really done anything this season. So who’s to say he’ll be ahead of any of those in the pecking order anyway?
