Kinnear on Superliga
By: Marc | August 8th, 2007Though this NY Times interview is from a week ago, Houston coach Dominic Kinnear had an interesting point about Superliga and the benefits to MLS:
What’s important for us is exposing players to a different style of competition, a different style from what we play in MLS. In our league, other than Chivas, which plays a Latin-type of game, our style in MLS does not vary too much. It’s also important for American guys who want to play on the national team to get exposed to the game internationally early in careers. I think it’s great.
People have been focusing on the money, the schedule, the Mexican-American rivalry, and other aspects of the competition, but Dom’s point is an excellent one.

I agree with the comments.
(1) playing global professional competition is beneficial.
(2) I’m sure as the league expands and time goes on, a few maverick managers will emerge that will have teams in the MLS playing different styles… Like a Bill Walsh or Bill Belichick in the NFL…I’ve really enjoyed Super Liga thus far! Just get it off of Telefutura and onto FSC or ESPN2 so I can watch more of it…
