Dynamo Fizzle in Digital Debut
By: Jeremy | March 30th, 2009With Brian Ching off with the U.S. national team and Kei Kamara still on suspension stemming from an altercation against this same Quakes team, a depleted Dynamo squad failed to achieve victory at Buck Shaw Stadium in Santa Clara, CA. A few flubs in the backfield and a persistent Quakes offense were enough for San Jose to take all three points. For Houston, losing to San Jose feels like getting punked by your little brother. So circle May 23rd on your calendar, the rematch is on!
One good note from Saturday’s game was the first broadcast from the club’s new television home, KHOU Channel 11.2, a digital sub-station of Houston’s local CBS affiliate. To watch the games you must now have a digital converter or Comcast (Channel 310). Probably not too many homes have the converter box since the digital conversion won’t happen until June 12th, so get one now if you don’t have one. I went through the trouble of checking out consumer reports and customer reviews to find the best box, but when I got to the store they didn’t have the one I was looking for, so I said “screw it, I’ll just get this one” (and I probably said it out loud since I tend to talk to myself). The cheap one I ended up with works great, so don’t worry about which one to get. I am very impressed with the picture quality. It’s just like watching a regular cable signal. There isn’t interference or ghost images of other channels like you get with the regular analog signal.

The action is called by two familiar voices, Charlie Pallilo and Glenn Davis. As always, Charlie sticks to the facts, never straying far enough to give an opinion, which is probably a blessing since I don’t think he has much soccer experience. Glenn, however, has decades of experience. This is probably what makes them a tolerable tandem. Each knows exactly what the other brings to the booth, although they sure make an odd looking couple. Whenever they do appear on camera together it looks like Glenn is a good two feet taller than Charlie. I sometimes worry when Charlie is silent for too long because I fear that Glenn may have eaten him.
That’s it for now. As always, goodwill towards all and FOREVER ORANGE.

On the TV broadcasts, PLEASE tell channel 11 to take off those ridiculously distracting sidebars on the right and left side of the screen. I wrote channel 11, and they said they’d get back to me and haven’t. SOooo … turnin’ off channel 11.2 and listening to the spanish guy on radio.
