Dynamo B-Team Advances With Win

By: Jeremy | July 2nd, 2009

The Dynamo defeated the Austin Aztex last night 2-0 to advance to the quarterfinal round of the U.S. Open Cup Tournament. The roster was dominated by seldom used players; Tally Hall, Julius James, John Michael Hayden, Erik Ustruck, Danny Cruz, Ade Akinbiyi. Despite the roster overhaul, the Orange still managed to post two goals. Corey Ashe delivered what proved to be the game winner in the 71st minute of play. Dominic Oduru finished it up with the second goal at the end of regulation.

Their next opponent will be a familiar foe, the Charleston Battery. (I’m still trying to figure out their logo. Are those Double-A batteries?) The Dynamo have been eliminated by the hands of Charleston in each of the last two seasons. It was an extra-time goal in 2007 and by way of the penalty kick shootout in 2008.

The game will be played on July 7th at Blackbaud Stadium in Charleston, SC. In seven regular season home games this year, the Battery boast a 4-0-3 record as well as conceding only 2 goals. The Dynamo could very well have their hands full in this one.

For a shot of envy, check out The Three Lions. It’s an “English-style” pub located on the second floor of Blackbaud Stadium. Very cool.

The winner will face the Seattle Sounders or Kansas City Wizards in the semi final round. On the other side of the bracket, D.C. United will face the Harrisburg City Islanders (USL-2) with the winner to match up against the Wilmington Hammerheads (USL-2) or Rochester Rhinos (USL-1). It looks like D.C. may have an easier route seeing there are no other MLS teams standing between them and the finals, but I guess that’s what happens when you are the defending champs.

FOREVER ORANGE

Dallas sucks.

Funny, last I heard of Tally Hall, he was ignoring the fact that LA had drafted him and heading to Denmark. Or Norway. Or someplace. Didn’t know he was back in MLS. How did he look? Any chance he’ll eventually replace Onstad?

And how is it that you guys always get everyone who comes back from Scandinavia?

Also, I think it’s awesome that there are still two USL-2 sides in the mix.

    Jeremy,
is the Charleston logo question a serious one, or just snark?

You say that like those are mutually exclusive. ;-)

Cool, Jeremy. I knew you were good on the snark, but I haven’t read enough of you to know when you reach the limits…

I am completely green (and not the good, environmental way) over their pub thing. Seems a much better way/location to spend half-time than waiting in the long line to get lukewarm Miller Light from a plastic, movable cart.

Yeah, the concessions could be much better at Robertson. Maybe some local Shiner Bock (cold) would be nice! Wouldn’t it be cool to have Shiner on front of the Dynamo jerseys instead of Amigo Energy?
