Breaking News: St.Louis Is America’s Soccer Capital?

By: Jeremy | November 19th, 2009

st_louisI was reading about the rebel soccer teams and their departure from the United Soccer League’s First Division. It seems that St. Louis is about to unleash their soccer prowess upon the nation. This is from the website of the newly formed St. Louis Soccer United.

St. Louis and soccer are synonymous. No city in North America has as long a tradition, or as deep a heritage as St. Louis, Missouri, the soccer capital of America.

Interesting. I can’t say I have ever thought of St. Louis whenever someone mentions soccer. Actually, the only thing that comes to mind when pairing St. Louis and soccer is the spanking hot Hope Solo.

Here’s a message to St. Louis. Don’t get all presumptuous on us. It’s not becoming. When was the last time you had a professional soccer team, 1977? So don’t thrust yourselves upon us with your high and mighty know-it-all douchebag attitude. OK, that might be a little extreme. Just watch it, ok? You’re on thin ice.

FOREVER ORANGE

Dallas sucks.

You must be kidding! You obviously don’t know the history of US soccer very well (or don’t care), and probably aren’t aware that St.Louis has one of the largest youth soccer cultures and has produced and continues to produce great soccer talent. St.Louis University is one of the greatest soccer colleges. You do realize that Professional Outdoor soccer has never been that popular nationwide until MLS, and St.Louis has always had a professional team, even if it was indoor. As far as not getting an MLS team goes, as much as it is surprising to most of the US that St.Louis doesn’t have a team, we weren’t as lucky as Houston to steal an already existing team and play at a crappy/embarrasing college football field. Classy!

It’s always funny when some moron assumes that something isn’t true just because he’s too ignorant to know about it. St. Louisans were playing soccer by the thousands when Houston was a mosquito-ridden, uncivilized bumfuck trading post – oh, wait, it still is.

How many USMNT players has Houston produced? How many amateur national championships have Houston clubs won? How was Houston’s pro soccer record before you guys stole the Earthquakes? When it comes to “high and mighty know-it-all douchebag attitude”, this post is the all-time champion.

It doesn’t list current players, but players with ties to St.Louis in the MLS would include: Brad Davis,Jack Jewsbury,Brian McBride, Taylor Twellman,Steve Ralston,Pat Noonan and countless others. Of course I have to mention German Bundesliga star forward, Ibisivec!

If you’ve read my blog before, you’d know that my posts are generally bullshit-based, generally towards the direction of humor. I don’t doubt the history and heritage of soccer in St. Louis. And you’re right, my soccer knowledge is quite limited. Quite moronic if that’s the adjective you’re most comfortable with. Again, if you’ve read my blog before you’d know that.

My point is, and maybe you can answer this for me, how was St. Louis designated as America’s soccer capital? Was there a national vote? Will there be another election at some point? Who votes? Is it a computer-based formula like the BCS? If this election process is something else I’m missing (among the other vast soccer information absent from my wee soccer brain), then please educate me.

Also, when I say “OK, that might be a little extreme,” that means the preceding statement isn’t to be taken seriously.

Jon, the Lou? I thought Louisville was referred to as the Lou. But I must be mistaken because that’s in Kentucky. Please clarify.

Jeremy, since you’ve already admitted that you do not know what you’re fucking talking about, why don’t you simply delete your insulting and inaccurate blog entry?

I appreciate everyone’s concern and it’s nice to know that people read this stuff, but I think there’s a bit of confusion since nobody is answering my question. I have been reading up on the history since yesterday’s post. Yes, it’s undoubtedly impressive, but nowhere in my reading is my question being addressed.

I’ll post a follow-up article later today to clarify my stance and question. If someone can answer my question(s) I’ll post an apology without hesitation.

Ah Jeremy, way to stir stuff up! Now you know that if you want more comments on your blog, all you have to do is in someway question St. Louis. And I’m with you, I never got the ballot to vote for the US Soccer Capital. What kind of crap is that?!? They’re just trying to keep women from voting, huh?

I’m pretty sure CNN just declared Seattle America’s Soccer City ;)

    http://edition.cnn.com/2009/SPORT/football/11/20/football.mls.seattle.sounders/

St. Louis has a great history, but it’s just that, history.

Long-time Sounders fans have been shocked to learn that our football history outside MLS is unknown and disregarded. We have to reestablish ourselves because we’ve been away from the top flight for so long.

    Same with St. Louis.

St Louis is a great soccer city and has a rich tradition, but the claim that “St. Louis and soccer are synonymous” is just stupid. St. Louis doesn’t even have a top-flight team.

I wasn’t taking a swipe at Seattle. I was taking a swipe at CNN. They will run the exact same story next year, and just change the names.
