As Close As It Gets
By: Jeremy | November 9th, 2009In my opinion, the two best teams in MLS already faced eachother during these playoffs. Forget the finals, the best matchup is/was Houston vs. Seattle.
What more can you say about Seattle and their fans? They are the pinnacle example of what every team strives for. Sure, there might be some exceptions, like a few over-zealous Sounders fans that chose to sing through the moment of silence for the Fort Hood tragedy. But beyond that, we should congratulate Seattle for a great inaugural season. And I mean that in a sincere, non-smug kind of way. I’m sure they have many championships ahead of them.
My new favorite player, aside from any player that wears orange, is Freddie Ljungberg. How can you not be impressed by this guy? He is everywhere. He took a dive at one point in the match, and you know how I feel about dives, but he quickly got up with a half-smile grin. It was the look of a savvy veteran trying to work all aspects of the game. And why wouldn’t he? These teams had played for nearly 3 hours without scoring. But what I liked about it was that he knew right away that the ref wasn’t buying it so he got up and got back into play. He didn’t continue to milk it in a punk Montero way. Of course, had he got away with it, this paragraph would read much differently.
Just curious, if there are any Seattle residents reading this… Did you hear anything on your radio stations this morning regarding the match? I ask because I didn’t hear one mention of the Dynamo during my commute to work. Not even a brief “and the Dynamo won,” there was nothing mentioned at all, at least not within the hour I was listening. It’s quite a downer after such an epic battle between two great teams.
Now we’re off to face Donovan and Golden Balls. It should be another great one. If I remember correctly, there was only one goal scored in the two games played between Houston and Los Angeles this season. But considering the rosters fielded by each team in those contests, I don’t think the previous matchups will be much of an indication of what’s to come.

I’m a Houstnian who has been living in Seattle for the last four years. The sounders new is pretty ubiquitous. It takes a backseat to the Seahawks coverage but thats about it.

Hey yall- I am a seattle fan that was at the game in Houston and have to say I/we didn’t even hear “the moment of silence” being announced. I am so sorry that we sang- I lost a friend in that shooting, and if we had heard it we would have stopped our singing and chanting. I hope your new mayor gets you guys a real stadium with better everything.
On behalf of the Sounders fans please forgive us. We couldn’t hear a thing for stadium announcing. Good luck to you all in the rest of the play offs. Thanks for a great time in Houston! See you next year!Posted from

To answer your question- Every sports radio station I listened to and non sports radio mentioned it in some way. Small blurbs. One of our local radio hosts was with us in the match so they talked about it in length. It all depends on our hosts- its been talked about a lot this afternoon, not as much this morning though
